Free IRS Tax Services

You may qualify for other income tax preparation services provided by the IRS at no cost to you either online or in your community. These services are not offered at branch locations.

IRS Free File

If your 2019 income was below $69,000 and you meet other qualifications, IRS.gov has several do-it-yourself options to file your federal, and in most cases, state tax returns. Visit IRS Free File to choose from several software providers for a program that meets your needs.

If your 2019 income was above $69,000, and you're comfortable doing your own taxes, the IRS offers “Free File Fillable Forms” for federal returns only. These forms are available from late January to mid-October each year. For more information, visit IRS Fillable Forms.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program

The VITA program offers free tax preparation help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and taxpayers who speak limited English who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. To find a VITA site near you, use the locator tool or call 888.227.7669.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program

The TCE program also offers free tax help for taxpayers, particularly those who are age 60 and older. This program provides specialized help with questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with nonprofit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

To find a TCE site near you, use the locator tool or call 800.906.9887. The AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program operates most TCE sites and also offers a TCE site locator, which is available during the tax filing season (late January to April 15).
