No-Cost Tax Services

You may qualify for other income tax preparation services provided by the IRS at no cost to you either online or in your community. These services are not offered at branch locations.

IRS Free File

If your income is below $66,000, IRS.gov has several do-it-yourself options to file your federal and, in most cases, state tax returns. Visit IRS Free File to choose from several software providers for a program that meets your needs.

If your income is above $66,000, and you're very comfortable doing your own taxes, the IRS offers “Free File Fillable Forms” for federal returns only. These forms are available from late January to mid-October each year. For more information, visit IRS Fillable Forms.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program

The VITA program offers free tax preparation help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. The Credit Union no longer participates as a VITA site location.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program

The TCE program also offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older. This program provides specialized help with questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

Find VITA and TCE providers

To find the VITA or TCE site nearest you, call 800.906.9887 or enter your ZIP code in the VITA and TCE site locator. The locator provides real-time results during tax season so the best time to search is January through April when you’re ready to have your tax return completed.

The AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program operates most TCE sites and also offers a TCE site locator. This tool is only available from late January or early February until April 15 each year.

Deposit your tax refund into an LGFCU account!

Consider having your refund deposited directly into an LGFCU account if you e-file. Enjoy the peace of mind of knowing your funds are safely in your account.
