If you volunteer at your local food bank, share the joy of music where you live, help build houses in your neighborhood, or give back in any way, we invite you to join LGFCU and credit unions everywhere in making a world of difference, close to home on International Credit Union (ICU) Day®.

The credit union difference

This year, International Credit Union Day is Thursday, October 17. The theme is “Local Service. Global Reach.” ICU Day is a celebration of the impact credit unions and other financial cooperatives have made — and continue to make — for their members and their communities around the world.

LGFCU is proud to serve North Carolina communities. In 2018, LGFCU employees completed more than 788 volunteer hours, donated funds equaling more than 10,375 cans to Urban Ministries of Wake County; and, collected $1,700 and 90 pounds of food (17,100 meals) for Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s BackPack Buddies program.

During the holidays, staff sponsored families by donating new clothes, toys and other household items. Employees also helped share the love of music by giving the gift of guitars to places serving the temporarily homeless in our communities. Through these efforts and more, we helped get meals on the family table, food in the pantry and music in the air.

ICU Day also reminds us to be thankful for the lives and communities improved by the unique principles and actions of our movement around the world. It’s because of this local service in communities across the world that we have a global credit union movement 260-million members strong.

For nearly two centuries, financial cooperatives have encouraged people of every ethnicity, gender and belief to come together and give their all toward the betterment of their communities. It's about people helping people.

It always comes back to you

Credit unions have recognized International Credit Union Day on the third Thursday of October since 1948 to raise awareness about the credit union difference and celebrate the spirit of the global credit union movement. On that day, we reflect upon the credit union movement's history and promote its achievements.

International Credit Union Day is recognized by the World Council of Credit Unions, the global trade association and development platform for credit unions and other financial cooperatives, as well as numerous national credit union trade associations and federations around the world.
