This year’s FAFSA Day kicks off a week of opportunities for students to get free, personalized help filling out the college financial aid form.
On Saturday, February 20, 2016, from 9 a.m. to noon, college financial aid officers and other volunteers will help students complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms at many locations around the state. Completing the form is the first step toward getting federal aid for college, trade school or graduate school.
The program, sponsored by the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC), is open to students who plan to attend school in the 2016-17 academic year. If you can’t make it to FAFSA Day, you’ll still have time to get help filling out the form. Beginning on Monday, February 22, 2016, parents and students can visit a branch nearest them during normal business hours for help with filling out their FAFSA.
No matter which event you attend be sure to bring your:
- 2015 federal tax returns (for you and your student). Visit Tax Services to find out how a Credit Union tax preparer can complete and file your tax return for you.
- FSA ID for you and the student.
- 2016-2017 FAFSA on the Web Worksheet.
This fall, FAFSA filing changes will take effect. Students will be able to file a 2017–18 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016, rather than waiting until January 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1 every year.

Each year LGFCU awards 120 one-year scholarships of $1,000 each to graduating high school students and post-secondary students attending colleges, universities, graduate schools and trade schools. But, don’t delay. March 4 is the last day to submit an application. Applicants must have an individual LGFCU Share Account or hold a joint LGFCU Share Account with a parent, and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
