Maurice Smith serves as President of Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU).
Prior to serving in this capacity, Smith held the position of Executive Vice President from 1992-1999. Before joining LGFCU, Smith was the Vice President of Marketing from 1985-1992 and Vice President/City Executive and Loan Officer from 1979-1985 at State Employees’ Credit Union.
As President of LGFCU, Smith is responsible for asset and liability management, marketing, managerial accounting, corporate governance, research and development, strategic planning, public/member relations and operations oversight.
Working with the Credit Union in this capacity allows Smith to advance the Credit Union philosophy, which also coincides with his own—to improve the lives of members of the community using financial services as a catalyst to spur economic development and create opportunities for jobs, retail and quality affordable housing.
Smith received a BS in Business Administration from UNC-Wilmington in 1979, and later went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the NC Central University School of Law in 2005. His accreditations include being a Certified Credit Union Executive (CCUE), graduate of the Stanford University Executive Management School, graduate of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Marketing School and possessing a NC Real Estate Broker’s license.
His professional affiliations are many and include being a member of various boards and associations: CUNA Board of Directors, CUNA Governmental Affairs Committee, North Carolina Credit Union League (NCCUL) Board of Directors, Carolinas Credit Union Foundation (CCUF) Board of Directors, NC Minority Support Center Board of Directors, NCCUL Governmental Affairs Committee, National Association of Federal Credit Unions Accounting Standards Committee, UNC School of Government Foundation Board of Directors, NC Local Leadership Foundation Board of Directors, Highest Honors awarded by the National Credit Union Institute, member of the Filene Research Institute Research Council and a member of the NC Bar Association.
Smith lives in Cary, NC with his wife. They have two children in college.
