Shred and Protect Event set

Carteret County is hosting an event designed to help keep residents safe from identity theft.

Shred and Protect, sponsored by Local Government Federal Credit Union, will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Carteret County Offices parking lot, 302 Courthouse Square, Beaufort.

People can bring their personal documents and records to be safely shredded at no cost. There is a limit of three document boxes, or 75 pounds of paper, per attendee. Papers that should be shredded are those that contain account numbers, birth dates, passwords or PINs, signatures, Social Security numbers, addresses, email addresses or phone numbers.

Child fingerprinting kits, blood pressure screenings, Sparky the Fire Dog and McGruff the Crime Dog also will be on site.
