The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department will sponsor two free pre-holiday shred-a-thons in cooperation with Local Government Federal Credit Union, University Mall, the Chapel Hill Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Orange County residents, residents that live in the part of Chapel Hill lying within Durham County, Orange County businesses, and local government employees that work within Orange County may securely destroy their personal confidential documents at no cost.

Both events are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will take place at the following locations:

  • Thursday, Oct. 11: University Mall on Estes Drive in Chapel Hill, near the Wachovia Bank Building.
  • Saturday, Oct. 13: Hampton Pointe Shopping Center on N.C. Hwy 86 in Hillsborough at the 24-hour recycling drop-off site located behind The Home Depot.

There is a limit of 10 banker-box sized boxes or large bags of paper per person, and only one trip per person. Remove any non-paper materials prior to bringing loads to the shred-a-thon. No plastic bags, plastic binders, plastic folders, metal tabs, laminated paper, computer disks or any other electronic media can be shredded. Incidental staples or paper clips are acceptable.

Shredding will take place onsite in full view of people delivering paper. Shredded paper will be recycled.
