LGFCU celebrates its 25th Anniversary

A quarter of a century, 25 years, or 9,125 days. No matter how you describe this silver anniversary, March 24, 2008 marks 25 years of service for Local Government Federal Credit Union—an institution whose mission is to improve the lives of our members!

We’re excited to share this occasion with our fellow member-owners and partners who helped us successfully reach this milestone. You’ve put your confidence in us to meet your financial needs. We appreciate you for selecting LGFCU, because we know you have a choice.

Employees of local governments organize to start LGFCU

LGFCU’s journey began in 1982 when a dedicated group of county and municipal employees realized local government workers would benefit greatly from having their own credit union. On March 24, 1983, the National Credit Union Administration granted a federal charter to the North Carolina Local Government Employees' Federal Credit Union, with a field of membership to include local government employees statewide.

Over the years we have stayed the course amid a whirlwind of changes in society, to the economy and among financial institutions, all to fulfill our original purpose of improving members’ lives. We remain committed to helping our members prosper by offering affordable, safe and comprehensive financial services through good times and bad. That’s something that will never change.

People helping people and communities

Now known as Local Government Federal Credit Union or LGFCU*, we’ll continue to put member needs first. This year we’re launching new programs to better serve local government units and their communities. You’ll also see more efforts to reach out to our younger members. Our focus on building a volunteer corps and staying in touch with members will keep flourishing. And along with this exciting expansion of services for members, you can trust, as always, that we’ll continue to encourage member education, credit union advocacy and responsible financial management.

You may see signs of the 25th anniversary celebration throughout the year, from our customized anniversary logo to an extra special annual meeting, so keep an eye out for them!

*Twenty-fifth Tidbit

*In 2006, LGFCU requested to change its formal name—North Carolina Local Government Employees' Federal Credit Union—to what had previously been its trade name, Local Government Federal Credit Union. This change helped LGFCU better manage the credit union’s brand and, in turn, helps protect members from attempts to compromise personal information.
